How to inspect and replace your car’s windshield wipers

Windshield wipers can be a part of your car’s safety system that is often neglected. If your windshield wipers do not work properly, it can be difficult to see the road and other hazards when it rains or snows. Defective windshield wipers can be ineffective and can even stain or scratch the windshield, creating potential visibility problems. Simple and regular maintenance can help make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition.

Inspect your windshield wipers regularly

Wiper blades are made of rubber and can wear out even with limited use. That’s why they should be inspected and replaced on a regular basis, if necessary, every six or 12 months. If the tires are cracked, cracked or very worn, they may not grip the windshield properly and may have difficulty removing all trash, rain, sleet or snow.

Windshield wipers can suffer damage during the winter months * and, because the weather conditions vary, you should consider reviewing your user manual and the information that comes with the windshield wipers to guide you.

Replace your windshield wipers

Changing the windshield wipers is usually a simple task. If you are not sure how to do it, it may be a good idea to go to a professional – it is often done at the lubricant shop:

  • Measure the length of the windshield wipers or consult the owner’s manual of your car to find the correct size.
  • Remove the old cleaner. Raise the windshield wiper arm and press the small tab on the bottom of the windshield where it joins the arm. When the tab is depressed, slide the wipers off the arm, pulling down.
  • Place the new windshield wiper. Squeeze it firmly on the arm. You will hear a click sound when it clicks into place. Now, simply place your arm slowly on the windshield and repeat this process on the other arm of the windshield wiper.
  • Finally test the windshield wipers after installation. It is better to do it now, when it is convenient, instead of doing it during the middle of a downpour.

Following these simple steps can help make sure your windshield wipers work properly and maximize your visibility to drive safely.
