Do It Yourself windshield chip repair
Repair Kit
Two types of chip repair kit self-glass. The syringe includes a less expensive and a special resin. This type of kit is for use once and contains enough resin to repair a single chip. Kit includes little more expensive resin and a plastic bridge. You can buy spare parts for resin kits and use them again and again.
You can repair chips or wells up to an inch in diameter with these kits. They are not intended to cracks, chips or spearing stars. Repair works best when done as soon as possible. The resin cannot join the old cracks.
Clean the windshield
Clean and dry thoroughly with a glass cleaner and let it dry. If there is dirt on the same chip, you can use a pin or paper clip bent to clean.
Spread an old towel or rag under the tab on the hood to collect drops of resin.
Injecting resin
The kit should contain a small adhesive disk and a plastic pedestal. Join mount to the windshield with the adhesive disk, centered on the chip. Remove the cap from the syringe and the syringe firmly in the seat pedestal. Pull back the plunger and hold for a few seconds and then release. This helps to get the air out of the chip, and when you release the piston forcing resin into the chip. I repeat 10 times.
Inspect repair
Check from inside the car to see if there are air bubbles. If so, you may have to repeat the process down a bit.
The resin is cured in about half an hour. After the resin has hardened, removing the syringe and the pedestal. You can scrape the pedestal with a razor blade.
Some kits include an additional step of applying a film hardening. Follow the instructions on the box this step.
