With the right tools, anyone can install a car windshield. While it may be a bit slow, in the end you will be glad that you have performed the maintenance of the car on your own, without the help of a mechanic or having to spend a fortune.
Explanation
- Remove the brushes.
- Remove molding of the entire windshield with a painter’s knife (available at any auto parts store). Most molding was carried out by a spring clip. Proper coining of the tool between the body and the molding forces the clip to loosen the molding.
- Cut the sealant between the windshield and the car with the painter’s knife.
- Once all the sealant has been cut off, remove the windshield from the car.
- Remove all old sealant or broken window frame from window.
- Install new sealant in window frame.
- Place new windshields in the frame, pressing all the way around in the same direction. It may be necessary to lightly tap the windshield with a rubber hammer to seat it.
- Reinstall the molding. You should be able to put the molding in place and push it down. Sometimes it is necessary to use a rubber hammer.
- Check for leaks.
Tips & Warnings
- There is another way to remove the sealer without using a painter’s knife. First, make a hole in the top edge of the windshield and one on the bottom edge of the windshield. Pass some heavy fishing line (or small diameter solid wire) into these holes. With a sawing motion, keep the line at the bottom and move the top line all the way around the window. This should cut through all the sealant around the window and the car.
- It would be best to consult with an auto parts store to see what kind of painter’s knife or other specialty tool is recommended for your particular molding.
- Never, never pry the windshield with a screwdriver. Pressure applied to a single area of a windshield will usually cause it to break.
